“That’s what writing is all about, after all, making others see what you have put down on the page and believing that it does, or could, exist and you want to go there.”
Anne McCaffrey
Today would have been Anne McCaffrey’s Birthday, a woman who was inspiring, smart, and wrote books that I read repeatedly, wishing every time that it was real and I could go there.
She’s meant a lot to me since my teen years when I first read them, and now all of her series are a major part of my own home library. I enjoy the varied characters, the wide worlds she’s developed, and such imagination. Everything tied up with hope, and doing what’s right. There’s love, battle, living, dying, dragons. And dolphins, and space ships, and aliens, and powers of the mind…who wouldn’t want to live in such places?
I remember reading her books with such emotion, being carried off on a dragon along with Lessa, and don’t get me started on the amount of tissues needed to get over the death of Master Robinton. I also dove into Rowan’s life, and The Ship Who Sang, I sang with her. So many worlds she showed me where doing the right thing and fighting for good was the best story and the best life anyone could live.
I have no favorite, I love them all.
I hope that my own stories also give that sense of hope, of finding your way, of finding a place of acceptance – or creating one. Happy Birthday, Anne! Your inspiration and characters live on in all of us who dove into your worlds and so wanted to stay there…
